Furnace

Emergency Furnace Repair in Portland, Oregon

Waking up to no heat isn't an inconvenience you schedule around. We diagnose the actual fault, tell you what it takes to fix, and tell you honestly when a repair isn't worth doing.

Spotting Trouble Early

You may need a repair if you're noticing:

Most furnace failures give warning first. The ones that don't are usually the ones where the warning was there and nobody was looking.

Unusually high heating bills

A sudden spike with no change in how you're using the house means the furnace is working harder than it should to produce the same heat.

Inconsistent heating

Some rooms too hot, others cold. That's a distribution problem, or a system that no longer matches the house.

Strange noises

Banging, whistling and grinding are not normal operating sounds. A new noise is new information about something that changed.

Frequent cycling

Turning on and off more often than it used to means the furnace is struggling to hold the temperature, and every cycle adds wear.

Bad odours

Burning or musty smells through the vents are worth acting on the same day rather than waiting to see whether they clear.

It runs but the house stays cold

Air moving without heat behind it points at ignition, the gas supply, or a safety control doing its job for a reason.

The Difference

A furnace burns fuel. That changes what a fault means.

A heat pump that stops working leaves you cold. A furnace involves combustion and venting, so some faults are a safety question rather than only a comfort one — and a few of them are the reason a furnace has safety controls that shut it down deliberately.

That's why we diagnose before we quote, and why we won't talk you into keeping something running that shouldn't be. If a system needs to stop, we'll say so on the first visit rather than the third.

Diagnosed properly. Since 1999.

Sized with a real load calculation rather than a rule of thumb — square footage, layout, orientation, insulation and windows. High-efficiency gas furnaces, typically installed in a day.

Preventative Maintenance

Furnace Maintenance

A furnace burns fuel, which makes servicing it partly a safety job. What a visit covers depends on the age and condition of the system.

“I led him to our furnace, told him what I knew, and then got out of his way. 30 minutes later I hear the furnace roar up! The ignitor had burned out and the flame sensor needed cleaning. Call Budget if you need help.”

Repair or Replace

Sometimes the honest answer is that the repair isn't worth it.

Most faults are worth fixing, and we would rather fix one than sell you a furnace you don't need. But three signals change the arithmetic, and you should hear them from us rather than discover them next winter:

Over 15 years old

Past that point a furnace is nearing the end of its efficient life, and money spent on it buys less time than it used to.

Repeated repairs

Several call-outs across recent years usually means the next one is already on its way.

Heating unevenly

Comfort that never quite returns after a repair suggests the system was never matched to the house.

If yours hits all three, we'll tell you — and explain what a replacement would involve before you have to ask.
