A great many Portland homes were built on the assumption that summer here means opening a window at night. That assumption held for decades. It doesn't hold through a week where the overnight low never drops far enough to clear the heat out of the building.
A properly sized air conditioner does two jobs, and the second one is the one people underestimate. It lowers the temperature, and it pulls moisture out of the air. A house at 78 degrees and dry is more comfortable than a house at 74 degrees and humid, which is why an oversized unit that cools fast and shuts off can leave a room feeling clammy.
That is the difference between a system that was fitted and one that was ordered. Both cool. Only one of them makes the house feel right.

The Difference
Bigger is not better with cooling.
With a furnace, an oversized unit mostly wastes fuel. With an air conditioner it also makes the house less comfortable, because dehumidification only happens while the system is actually running. A unit too large for the space hits the thermostat setpoint quickly, shuts off, and never runs long enough to dry the air out.
So we run a load calculation rather than reading the label on whatever is out there now: climate, square footage, the size and shape and orientation of the home, the type and amount of insulation, and the windows. It is a longer conversation at the estimate. It is also the reason the new system feels different from the old one instead of identical.
