Cooling equipment is unusual among household systems in that it goes dormant for most of the year. A fault that developed last August doesn't announce itself over the winter — it waits, and then it surfaces on the first day the house genuinely needs the system.
That first day is also, reliably, the day every other homeowner in the metro area discovers the same thing. Proactive inspection catches issues before they become major, and it moves your appointment out of the queue that forms during a heat wave.
The other half of it is running cost. A system that isn't fighting a restricted filter or an underperforming charge uses less energy to hold the same temperature, and that shows up on every summer bill rather than once.
What a Visit Covers

We don't publish a fixed checklist, because a fixed checklist is misleading in both directions — it promises work your system may not need, and quietly leaves out work it might.
Depending on the condition of the system, a tune-up can include filters and airflow, refrigerant levels, electrical connections, the coils and the condensate drain, along with the thermostat and how the system is cycling.
A four-year-old system serviced every spring needs a different visit from a fifteen-year-old one nobody has opened. Both are worth doing. Selling them as the same job would be easier and less useful.
A system that isn't fighting a restricted filter or a poor charge draws less power to do the same work.
Small issues caught in spring don't get the chance to become an emergency call in the middle of August.
Replacement is the expensive outcome. Maintenance is mostly about pushing it further away.

When to Book
Spring, before the first hot week.
The best time to schedule a tune-up is ahead of the high-temperature season, so the system is primed before it's asked to do anything. In Portland that means spring — the same principle that puts a furnace service in early autumn.
It is also the easiest time to get one booked. The identical visit during a heat wave competes with everybody whose system has already failed, and a problem found in May is an appointment where the same problem found in August is an emergency.
